It was recorded that steel producers in Belgium experienced a 16.1% decrease in steel production in 2023 compared to 2022, reducing production to 5.89 million tons. While the average monthly steel production in Belgium was 585.83 thousand tons in 2022, the average monthly steel production in 2023 was recorded as 491.25 thousand tons.
In Belgium, there are 5 major steel mills producing steel: a blast furnace (BF&BOF) in Ghent with an annual steel capacity of 4.34 million tons, two blast furnaces in Charleroi with an annual production of 850,000 tons and 350,000 tons, and another blast furnace in Chatelet with an annual steel capacity of 1 million tons.
Despite supporting steel production, Belgium has witnessed a decrease in its production in recent years, and its imports of steel products in 2023 decreased by 18.2% compared to 2022. Flat products accounted for 79% of 2023 steel imports to Belgium, which reduced its imports of rolled steel products from third countries to 3.58 million tons. Flat product imports also declined by 14.7% to 3.58 million tons in 2023 compared to 2022, while long product imports decreased by 29.6% to 902.92 thousand tons.
2.7% drop in steel exports!
Belgium experienced a decrease in production and imports in 2023, but also a 2.7% decline in steel exports compared to 2022. With this downturn, steel exports fell to 2.04 million tons. Belgium's exports of long products increased by 3.3% annually to 91.63 thousand tons, while flat products increased by 3% to 1.94 million tons.
