Natural gas demand in Turkey is expected to reach record levels in the winter months of this year. Positive news came from Azerbaijan after the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Fatih Dönmez, announced that the negotiations for additional resources for natural gas were ongoing.
Azerbaijan Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov said that he signed a new agreement for the sale of natural gas from the Shah Deniz 1 field to Turkey.
Shahbazov said that from the Shah Deniz 1 field, 2.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas will be delivered to Turkey next year, and 3.5 billion cubic meters in 2023.
"In addition to Shah Deniz 2, we will increase natural gas shipments from Shah Deniz 1 (to Turkey)," Shahbazov said at the energy conference held in Moscow.
The contract, which envisages the annual shipment of 6 bcm of natural gas from Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz 2 field to Turkey, continues.
Azerbaijan's total natural gas production is expected to reach 43 billion cubic meters next year.
Azerbaijan stopped natural gas shipments from the Shah Deniz 1 field to Turkey in April due to the expiration of the contract.
Contracts with Nigeria and Russia are in the end
Turkey is trying to meet its natural gas needs with gas shipped through pipelines from Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran, and with liquefied natural gas (LNG) transported by ship from Algeria, Nigeria and other countries. However, it is stated that the renewal period has come for Turkey's natural gas import contracts.
The contract with Nigeria will expire at the end of the year, while its contract for gas imports from Russia will have to be renewed.
It was stated that in the negotiations between Gazprom and BOTAŞ, an agreement has not been reached yet, but the agreement will be completed before the end of the year.
