As most emissions originate from Australia's six alumina refineries and four aluminum smelters, the route aims to reduce emissions from energy-intensive refining and smelting.
Australia is the world's largest alumina exporter, bauxite producer and the world's sixth largest aluminum producer. According to the assessment, by 2023-24 Australia's bauxite production will increase to 109 million tons, with alumina and aluminum production to remain stable at around 21 million tons and 1.6 million tons, respectively.
