Fortescue, an Australian iron ore company, announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Austrian steelmaker Voestalpine. According to the Memorandum of Understanding, they will design and build a new net zero emission iron production facility at the Voestalpine plant in Linz.
The new iron production process will be based on Primetals Technologies' HYFOR and Smelter solutions. HYFOR is the world's first direct reduction process for iron ore powders without any agglomeration steps. The new Smelter technology is an electrically powered furnace to produce alternative green hot metal.
