Gestamp chose Acciaieria Arvedi in line with its goal of creating a sustainable supply chain. Through an R&D project initiated three decades ago, Arvedi has developed an innovative technology that enables the production of steel from recycled scrap. This technology significantly reduces CO2 emissions and utilises certified renewable energies when producing using the Arvedi-ESP method and electric arc furnaces.
This strategic partnership is seen as an important step towards decarbonisation in the automotive industry. The steel scrap generated during Gestamp's stamping processes will be returned to Arvedi, where it will be reprocessed and incorporated into the production cycle. This will ensure more efficient use of resources by acting in line with circular economy principles.
Javier Imaz, Purchasing Director at Gestamp, stated that the agreement is in line with Gestamp's environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy and supports their decarbonisation goals in the production of automotive components through the use of low-emission ARVZERO™ steel.
Fabio Baldrighi, Vice President of Acciaieria Arvedi, emphasised that the cooperation is an important step towards creating a sustainable supply chain. Arvedi serves many sectors, including the automotive industry, with steel coils produced from recycled scrap and has a total annual production capacity of over 5 million tonnes.
The agreement will enable Gestamp to utilise ARVZERO™ steel produced at Arvedi's Cremona plant and processed at its Cremona and Trieste plants. It is stated that direct emissions in Arvedi's production process are compensated in accordance with the Scope 1 and Scope 2 parameters of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
