The decline in demand for steel and metal construction, sheet metal processing, and mechanical engineering, a 30% decrease in the market, high competition, and low-priced imports reportedly were the reasons for ArcelorMittal's decision to close the Olpe plant. Intense competition in the sector and low-priced imports from countries outside Europe caused a major challenge.
ArcelorMittal announced at a meeting for employees at its warehouse in Olpe that it plans to close the Olpe plant by mid-2025. The 63-employee warehouse is scheduled to remain in operation until the closure date and continue to offer a full range of products and services to customers.
Furthermore, the Siegerland/South Westphalia region is having to cope with the decline of the steel industry as well as geographical disadvantages and legacy infrastructure problems. The decision to close Olpe and Kreuztal negatively affects the economic structure of the region, leading to job losses and a lack of investment.
