This new furnace aims to support sustainable production efforts by greatly increasing the use of recycled steel in the steelmaking process by 2025. This will reduce the carbon footprint of the Fos-sur-Mer plant by 10%. This step emphasises the importance attached to environmentally friendly production processes, while at the same time aiming to improve energy efficiency.
In addition, another important step in ArcelorMittal's sustainability journey will be taken at the Fos-sur-Mer plant. Planned to be commissioned by 2030, the electric arc furnace (EAF) will reduce carbon emissions in steel production by 35%. This step will contribute to meeting the company's goal of carbon neutrality by 2050 and will set an example for the green transformation of the steel industry.
ArcelorMittal France CEO said: "Sustainability is at the centre of our business strategy. These investments are part of our commitment to create a more liveable world for future generations, as well as demonstrating our environmental sensitivity in steel production." He also emphasised that the company will continue to contribute to the local economy and increase employment opportunities with new investments.
