The facility employed approximately 70 workers and specialized in converting galvanized flat steel into pre-painted products. The closure, impacting sectors such as construction and white goods, is attributed to several factors, including region-specific challenges and the broader crisis facing the European steel industry. Operations are expected to cease by July 31.
A company representative stated that every effort was made to keep the Avellino plant open, but financial losses in recent years made the closure decision unavoidable. The company also announced that it will collaborate with unions to support the workers affected by the shutdown.
Teodoro Boccuzzi, the Mayor of San Mango sul Calore stated, “The San Mango plant is one of the pillars of the local economy, employing over 70 direct workers and supporting a supply chain that affects hundreds of other families. Its closure will have dramatic consequences on our already fragile social and economic fabric, further worsening the employment situation in a region that is already suffering from population decline and a lack of job opportunities.”
ArcelorMittal also announced the permanent closure of its long and flat steel product distribution center in Bologna, effective December 31, 2024. The company stated that its packaging service plant in Canossa will continue its operations. Additionally, distribution activities at the Flero center in Brescia will proceed without interruption.
