AM/NS India is set to develop one of India’s most substantial steel projects

AM/NS India, a collaborative venture between global steel giants ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, is gearing up to develop one of India’s most substantial greenfield steel projects with an estimated investment of Rs 1.4 lakh crore (US 16.8 billion). The integrated steel facility is planned for Andhra Pradesh’s Anakapalli district and is set to have an impressive total production capacity of 17.8 million tons per annum (MTPA).

The project will be executed in two phases. The first phase, involving an investment of Rs 80,000 crore (USD 9.6 billion), will establish a 7.3 MTPA capacity plant on 2,600 acres. The subsequent phase will require an additional Rs 60,000 crore (USD 7.2 billion) to build a 10.5 MTPA facility, expanding the project area by another 2,000 acres. The agreement for this ambitious plan was concluded during a virtual meeting between Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh and ArcelorMittal CEO Aditya Mittal.

Incorporating advanced green steel technology, the plant aims to target high-value sectors, notably the automotive industry, to reduce India's dependency on steel imports. Strategic factors like the availability of land and proximity to the Nakkapalli port, which is near the Nakkapalli bulk drug park, were vital for site selection. Additionally, AM/NS India is in the process of seeking approval for a dedicated jetty to streamline raw material imports from international suppliers. The groundbreaking for this landmark project is slated for January 2025, supporting AM/NS India’s strategic objective to achieve a production capacity of 40 MTPA by 2035.
