They expect the market to start growing again in September or October, thanks to the PNRR, the national post-pandemic recovery plan. To capitalise on this expected growth, Alfa Acciai is investing in the sector and strengthening the activities of its subsidiary Ferroberica.
Ferroberica, which has production facilities in Catania, Udine, Brescia and Vicenza, aims to reach a production volume of around 300,000 tonnes this year, up from a nominal capacity of 400,000 tonnes per year. The subsidiary achieved a turnover of €280 million ($306 million) in 2022. Ferroberica is also focussing on expanding its large structures division to supply oversized steel assemblies for major infrastructure projects financed by PNRR. The company offers solutions and feasibility studies for various infrastructure schemes.
Some projects in northern Italy have experienced delays due to the slow start of the PNRR, while financing has been secured for some projects in the south. Ferroberica expects the full PNRR to start in the next four to five months. The Alfa Acciai group, which includes Acciaierie di Sicilia, Ferroberica and Tecnofil, produced 2.5 million tonnes of steel last year.
