The conference highlighted the importance of regulation and standardization and noted that various regulations are being developed in collaboration with different actors in the sector to promote more sustainable and safe use of steel slag. In addition, the decision on the case to terminate the waste status of steel slag is being closely monitored.
UNESID believes that there should be regulations in place to provide certainty to users of the material and the industry is focused on developing these regulations in collaboration with the different actors involved throughout the life cycle of steel aggregates.
Emphasizing that the successful use of steel aggregates has been proven at national and international level, steel slag is becoming an attractive material as its regulated use minimizes its environmental footprint. At the conference, different actors in the sector shared knowledge on creating new opportunities for the application of steel aggregates, giving examples of traditional and innovative uses.
