While the country's crude steel production decreased by 2.3 percent to 2.6 million tonnes in December, this amount was recorded as 35.4 million tonnes in 2023 with a decrease of 3.9 percent.
Among the main reasons for this decrease were stated to be poor demand and high costs, especially in electric arc furnace steel production, which dropped sharply by 11 percent according to the data, revealing the lowest production level the sector has experienced in a long time.
In December, pig iron production fell by 2.8% yoy to 1.94 million tonnes, while hot rolled steel production increased by 6% year on year to 2.27 million tonnes. However, in the whole of 2023, pig iron production decreased by 0.9% yoy to 23.6 million tonnes, while hot rolled steel production recorded decrease by 3.6% to 30.64 million tonnes.
Kerstin Maria Rippel, Director General of the German Steel Association, is reported to state that they are concerned about Germany's steel production and need solutions to cope with delivery conditions and costs.
