98% of the ships that are withdrawn from the expedition at the end of their economic life are made of steel and the majority of this is recyclable.
The scrap pieces obtained after the recycling of the ships are brought to the iron and steel factories as steel raw material.
Dismantling is carried out by 22 ship recycling companies operating in the Aliağa Ship Breaking Zone in İzmir, which is permitted by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization.
In this context, 108 ships with a steel weight of 855 thousand tons were recycled last year. Its contribution to the economy was approximately 450 million dollars.
In the first half of 2021, 60 ships with a steel weight of 450 thousand tons were recycled and approximately 157 million dollars was saved in the economy.
5% increase in the number of recycled ships
In the first half of last year, 56 ships with a steel weight of 265,000 tons were recycled. Accordingly, compared to the first half of 2020, there was a 5% increase in the number of ships taken for recycling in the same period of this year, and an increase of approximately 70% in steel weight.
