Green materials revolution in global construction; UNIDO Compacts

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has announced commitments by the governments of Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, member countries of the Industrial Deep Decarbonisation Initiative (IDDI), to procure low-emission steel, cement and concrete. These pledges were made through IDDI's Green Public Procurement Commitment.

According to the information received, the governments of the four countries have announced commitments to procure near-zero-emission steel, cement and concrete from their respective countries over time. They also pledged to comply with emission reduction processes throughout the life span of projects to achieve net zero emissions in public buildings and built infrastructure.

These commitments provide an important contribution to the global decarbonization of industry by creating a market for low and near-zero emission materials such as steel and cement. It is estimated that public procurement is responsible for 25% of global construction revenues, as governments are one of the largest buyers of materials for major infrastructure projects.

They also highlighted their commitment to promote innovation and the application of breakthrough technologies by supporting various measures to increase demand for and merchantize near-zero-emission materials.

In order to accelerate the development and use of low and near-zero emission compatible emission accounting standards and definitions for construction materials such as steel, cement and concrete, the IDDI Secretariat is publishing a white paper on a potential roadmap for harmonized greenhouse gas emissions accounting standards at COP28 (Dubai - United Nations Climate Change Conference).

*A white paper is an in-depth researched report on a specific topic that offers a solution to a specific problem in a sector.
