Green certification becomes mandatory for public buildings

The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change is taking an important step towards sustainable construction.

Green certification becomes mandatory for public buildings

Banu Aslan, General Director of Vocational Services of the Ministry, announced that new public buildings with a total construction area of over 10 thousand square meters will be required to be built in accordance with the YeS-TR (Green Building and Settlement Certificate) system as of 2026.In her opening speech at the International Green Buildings and Cities Summit held in Istanbul, Aslan emphasized that this step is of great importance in terms of energy and water savings and environmental sustainability. Stating that green building designs will save 600 million kWh of energy every year, Aslan said that this is equivalent to one month of electricity production of Keban Dam. In addition, 50 million kilograms of carbon emission reduction and 800 million TL economic gain are targeted.

Green Certificate to be Disseminated
Stating that the YeS-TR application has been brought to a level to compete with certificates such as LEED, BREEAM and Green Star, which are widespread in the world, Aslan stated that efforts are underway for international recognition. Steps are being taken for the use of YeS-TR abroad, especially in the Turkic Republics.

Nature-Friendly Solutions Will Be Implemented Rapidly
Stating that contractors will be provided with advantages in work completion certificates in order to encourage green buildings, Aslan announced that cooperation is being made with relevant institutions to make green buildings more attractive in the purchase, sale and rental processes. In addition, incentive mechanisms will be implemented to ensure that existing buildings have Energy Performance Certificates and become energy efficient.

Rainwater and Gray Water Use Will Be Mandatory
Aslan stated that with the new Zoning Regulation, rainwater and gray water systems will become compulsory in some buildings, thus saving 10.2 million cubic meters of water annually. This saving is equivalent to the amount of water the size of Lake Mogan in 1.5 years.

Strict Control Comes to Building Materials
The process for auditing whether the building materials used in buildings comply with the standards will start in December 2024. Together with 81 provincial directorates, these inspections will contribute to safer and greener construction.

Digital Transformation Begins in the Construction Industry
General Manager Aslan announced that work has begun for digital transformation in the construction industry, which is the driving force of the Turkish economy. It was stated that thanks to the national BIM (Building Information Modeling) integration, project, construction and operation processes will be moved to digital platforms and the building life cycle will be managed with three-dimensional models.

In this context, it was reported that the process will be accelerated with the Architecture and Engineering Services Workshop to be held on November 28 in order to increase the competencies of architects and engineers.

New Standards in Thermal Insulation
In order to limit the amount of energy used in the heating and cooling processes of buildings, it was announced that the Ministry of Industry and Technology is cooperating with the Ministry of Industry and Technology to implement the TS825 Thermal Insulation Standard as an annex to the regulation.

These efforts are seen as an important milestone for Türkiye to become a leader in environmentally friendly building practices and contribute to a sustainable future.
