World pig iron production in May 2024 increased by 0.8% compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 124 million tons.
This figure saw an 8.2% increase compared to the previous month of April.
Global pig iron production in the January-May period of 2024 decreased by 1.8% compared to the same period last year, reaching 584.57 million tons. Specifically, 533.76 million tons of pig iron were produced by the blast furnace method and 50.81 million tons by the direct reduction method.
Global pig iron production using the blast furnace method decreased by 2.6% compared to the same month of the previous year, while it increased by 5.1% compared to the previous month, reaching 110.63 million tons. During the same period, pig iron production by the direct reduction method increased by 28% annually and 43% monthly, reaching 13.37 million tons.
The largest pig iron producing countries in the January-May period were as follows: China ranked first with 361.13 million tons, followed by India with 58.85 million tons, Japan with 25.6 million tons, Russia with 25.21 million tons, and South Korea with 17.99 million tons.
