Global crude steel production decreased by 3.4% in February

World crude steel production decreased by 3.4% y/y to 144.7 million tons (Mt) in February 2025.

Global crude steel production decreased by 3.4% in February

The World Steel Association announced crude steel production figures for February 2025. Accordingly, world crude steel production of 69 countries amounted to 144.7 million tons (Mt) in February 2025, decreasing by 3.4% compared to the same month of the previous year.

Crude steel production by region

In February, Africa's crude steel production increased by 7.6% y/y to 1.9 million tons. In the Asia and Oceania region, production decreased by 2.6% to 107.3 million tons. The EU (27) produced 10.1 million tons of steel, a decrease of 7.1%, while the rest of Europe produced 3.3 million tons, a decrease of 9.7%. Production in the Middle East decreased by 11.5% to 3.7 million tons. In North America, production decreased by 6.3% to 8.2 million tons. Production in Russia and other Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries and Ukraine was decreased by 1.9% to 6.7 million tons. South America produced 3.4 million tons of crude steel, decreased by 3.2%.

China's crude steel production decreased by 3.3% y/y to 78.9 million tons in February. In the same period, India's crude steel output increased by 6.3% to 12.7 million tons, while Japan produced 6.4 million tons, a decrease of 8.5%. The US produced 6 million tons of steel, a decrease of 7%, while Russia is estimated to have produced 5.8 million tons, a decrease of 3.4%. South Korea's output decreased by 0.7% to 5.2 million tons. Germany produced 2.7 million tons of crude steel, a 13.5% decrease, Türkiye 2.9 million tons, a decrease of 5.6%, and Brazil 2.7 million tons, a decrease of 1.6%. Iran's production decreased by 21.8% to 1.7 million tons.
