Fortescue begins construction of Christmas Creek green iron plant

Australia-based metals and mining giant Fortescue has officially started construction of the Christmas Creek green iron plant project.

Fortescue begins construction of Christmas Creek green iron plant

This innovative project is targeting the use of green hydrogen in the production of high purity pig iron, and is expected to transition to green ferrous metal production by the end of 2025.

Already in operation, the Christmas Creek Renewable Hydrogen Mobility Project is integrated with the hydrogen refueling center located at Fortescue's Green Energy Center in the Pilbara region. This project demonstrates Fortescue's commitment to environmentally friendly energy solutions.

The total cost of the project is estimated at US$33.8 million, of which US$2 million will be covered by funding from the Cook Government's Renewable Hydrogen Fund. This funding will also make it possible to procure 10 hydrogen fuel cell railcars for crew transportation at Christmas Creek. These railcars will replace Fortescue's existing diesel railcars.

The new facility is expected to produce approximately 195 tons of renewable hydrogen per year.
