Ferrous scrap imports increased in 2022

Ferrous scrap imports increased in 2022

According to the European Commission's data on ferrous waste and scrap exports in 2022, Turkey's ferrous waste and scrap imports from the EU in 2022 decreased by 18.3% compared to the previous year.

With the restriction of the EU's ferrous waste and scrap exports, the EU's ferrous waste and scrap exports to Turkey in 2022 decreased by 18.3% with 10 million 674 thousand tonnes, but maintained its 1st place again.

The imports of ferrous waste and scrap from countries that realised that imported ferrous waste and scrap will be transformed into raw materials rather than garbage increased significantly in 2022.

Despite these restrictions, Turkey's industrial sector remained in an advantageous position in 2022.

In 2022, India's ferrous scrap imports from the EU approached the amount of ferrous scrap exported from the EU to Egypt

In 2022, EU exports to Egypt decreased by 21.2% compared to the previous year, while exports to India increased by 2.5 times.

Egypt's imports of ferrous waste and scrap from the EU at the end of 2022 decreased from 1 million 817 thousand tonnes to 1 million 432 thousand tonnes compared to the previous year, while EU exports to India increased from 535 thousand tonnes to 1 million 374 thousand tonnes. In 2022, India has become a country that clearly realises that the ferrous waste and scrap imported from the EU will be converted into raw materials. The import amount of convertible ferrous waste and scrap increased by 2 and a half times compared to 2021, causing it to enter the top three. According to statistics, India's scrap imports from the EU may rank 2nd by the end of 2023.

Pakistan's imports of ferrous waste and scrap from the EU decreased by 3.9 per cent, while EU scrap exports to Bangladesh increased by 4.7 times

Bangladesh, a country in South Asia, has increased its demand for ferrous waste and scrap (remeltable) in 2022. Bangladesh's scrap imports from the EU increased from 150 thousand tonnes in 2021 to 703 thousand tonnes in 2022, in order for the industry to progress in the iron and steel sector and to make progress easier due to cheap labour.

Morocco's scrap imports from the EU increased by 72%, while Switzerland's ferrous scrap exports from the EU decreased by 14

According to 10-year forecasts, Morocco's scrap imports from the EU are expected to amount to 10,556,000 tonnes by the end of 2023.

Morocco's ferrous scrap imports from the EU increased by 62% in 2021 compared to the previous year and by 72% in 2022 compared to 2021, increasing to 6th place, surpassing Switzerland in ferrous scrap imports.

The increase in Morocco's scrap import rates in 2021 and 2022 has increased the target of developing its production and industry. In line with this goal, it is predicted that it will further increase scrap import rates in 2023 in order to produce raw materials by re-melting ferrous waste and scrap.

When the import rates of Morocco in 2021 and 2022 are evaluated; It is estimated that in 2023, Turkey will be able to approach the rate of ferrous scrap imports from the EU.

In 2022, Norway's imports of ferrous scrap from the EU increased by 33% compared to the previous year and ranked 8th

According to the estimated data, Switzerland's ferrous scrap imports from the EU may decrease to 483 thousand tonnes in 2022 and fall from 7th to 8th place by the end of 2023.

Thus, while Switzerland's ferrous waste and scrap imports from the EU will decrease, Norway may take Switzerland's place at the end of 2023 with its industrial acceleration target.

America's declaration of independence from EU countries affected ferrous scrap imports

America's scrap imports from Europe decreased by 40% in 2022 compared to the previous year and decreased to 9th place. This situation drew attention to America's retreat in its trade relations with Europe.

North Macedonia wants to gain momentum in industry

In 2021, North Macedonia's imports of ferrous scrap from the EU increased from 106 thousand tonnes to 112 thousand tonnes in 2022. In 2021, with an increase of 42% compared to the previous year, North Macedonia accelerated its ferrous scrap imports from the EU.

This increase in 2021 and 2022 is expected to continue in the following years without slowing down.
