Ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector exports are decreasing
The exports of the ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector are in decrease. In the first 2 months of the year, the exports of the ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector decreased by 16 percent compared to the same period last year, from $2.4 billion to $2 billion.
Istanbul Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters' Association (İDDMİB) announced the sector's export data for the January-February period of 2023. Evaluating the sector's export figures, Istanbul Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters' Association (İDDMİB) Chairman Çetin Tecdelioğlu emphasized that the sector started exports in 2023 with a decrease compared to last year and that they accelerated their efforts to reverse this situation. Tecdelioğlu said, "As a sector, we have received a share of 6.1 percent from Turkey's overall exports with our export figure in the first 2 months of 2023.
Our sector, which exported more than $1 billion in January, exported $1 billion in February 2023." The ferrous and non-ferrous sector, which exported $ 1.05 billion in January, exported $1 billion in February 2023. In the first 2 months of the year, the ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector exported more than $2 billion.
In the same period, Turkey's overall exports were announced as 38 billion dollars. The ferrous and non-ferrous sector received a share of 6.1 percent from general exports, becoming the 6th most exporting sector among the industrial sectors. Tecdelioğlu, who also evaluated the unit export prices of the sector, said, "The unit export price of the ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector in the January-February period of 2023 increased by 0.82 percent compared to the same period of last year and reached $4.78 per kilogram. In the same period, the exports of our sector came to the level of 276.4 thousand tons in terms of quantity.
Our exports to the European Union countries, which are the region where we export the most, amounted to 558.7 million dollars as of February 2023. In February 2023, Germany ranked first with 137.8 million dollars among the countries where our sector exported the most, Italy ranked second with 74.1 million dollars and USA ranked third with 50.3 million dollars of exports."
Contribution to overall exports with complementary sectors
Stating that aluminum maintained its top position in complementary sectors, Tecdelioğlu said, "In the February period of February 2023, the aluminum product group ranked first in terms of value with 393 million dollars in ferrous and non-ferrous metals complementary sector exports. The aluminum sector was followed by iron and steel products with 205.1 million dollars, metal goods with 187.6 million dollars and copper product groups with 186.1 million dollars."
Exports fell by 40% in earthquake provinces
Agriculture and Forestry Minister Vahit Kirişci said that exports from the 11 provinces where the earthquake occurred decreased by close to 40 percent from $3 billion to $1 billion 783 thousand. Kirişci, who attended the Adana Business World Consultation Meeting held at the Adana Chamber of Industry, pointed out that the share of earthquake provinces in total exports decreased from 15.5 percent to 10 percent. Kirişci stated that after the examinations of expert teams in 110 dams and 30 ponds in the region, there is currently no emergency situation that requires intervention, adding that the damage of the State Water Works is around 22 billion liras.
