There is a decrease in the exports of the ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector
There is a decrease in the exports of the ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector. In the first 2 months of the year, the exports of the ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector decreased by 16 percent compared to the same period last year, from $2.4 billion to $2 billion.
Istanbul Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters' Association (IDDMIB) announced the export data of the sector for January-February 2023. Evaluating the export figures of the sector, Çetin Tecdelioğlu, Chairman of the Board of Istanbul Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters' Association (IDDMIB), emphasized that the sector started exports in 2023 with a decrease compared to the previous year, and they accelerated their efforts to reverse this situation. Tecdelioğlu said, "As an industry, we got a 6.1 percent share of Turkey's general exports with our export figures in the first 2 months of 2023."
Our industry, which achieved an export of more than 1 billion dollars in January, also realized an export of 1 billion dollars in February 2023. The ferrous and non-ferrous sector, which exported 1.05 billion dollars in January, realized 1 billion dollars of exports in February 2023. In the first 2 months of the year, the ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector exported more than 2 billion dollars.
In the same period, Turkey's general export was announced as 38 billion dollars. The ferrous and non-ferrous sector became the 6th sector that realized the most exports among the industrial sectors, taking a share of 6.1 percent of the overall exports. Evaluating the unit export prices of the sector, Tecdelioğlu said, “The unit export price of the ferrous and non-ferrous metals sector in the January-February 2023 period increased by 0.82 percent compared to the same period of the previous year and amounted $4.78 per kilogram. In the same period, the exports of our sector amounted the level of 276.4 thousand tons in terms of quantity.
As of February 2023, our exports to the European Union countries, the region we export the most, amounted to 558.7 million dollars. In February 2023, among the countries to which our industry exports the most, Germany ranked first with 137.8 million dollars, Italy ranked second with 74.1 million dollars, and the USA ranked third with 50.3 million dollars of exports.
Contribution to overall exports with complementary sectors
Stating that aluminum maintains its top position in complementary sectors, Tecdelioğlu said, “In the period of February 2023, the aluminum product group ranked first on the basis of value with 393 million dollars in the exports of the complementary sector of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The aluminum sector was followed by iron and steel products with 205.1 million dollars, metal products with 187.6 million dollars and copper product groups with 186.1 million dollars.
Exports decreased by 40% in earthquake provinces
Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Vahit Kirişci, said that exports from 11 provinces where the earthquake took place decreased from 3 billion dollars to 1 billion 783 thousand dollars with a decrease of nearly 40 percent. Kirişci, who attended the Adana Business World Consultation Meeting held at the Adana Chamber of Industry, drew attention to the fact that the share of earthquake provinces in total exports decreased from 15.5 percent to 10 percent. Kirişci also stated that after the examinations of the expert teams in 110 dams and 30 ponds in the region, there was no emergency situation that would require intervention, adding that the damage of the State Hydraulic Works was around 22 billion liras.
