Ezz Steel to break ground for $400 million Suez steel plant in July

Egypt's Ezz Steel plans to break ground for its $400 million Suez direct reduction iron (DRI) plant in Egypt in late July or early August.

According to the information provided to MEED by a source close to the project, the facility, which will have a DRI capacity of 1.9 million tons (t/y) when completed, is planned to be completed in the first quarter of 2012.

"Preliminary work has started at the site and they are currently conducting pre-construction work and continuing with engineering. I believe the foundation of the project should be laid by August," the source said.

Ezz also builds 1.2 million tons of steel billet casters per year at its sister facility in Suez. The company has decided to produce both billet and flat products to meet the sometimes volatile demands of the Egyptian steel market. When demand for flat products is low, the company plans to produce more billets for sale to both domestic and international markets.

Italian Danieli won the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the construction of the plant located in the North African province of Suez, east of Cairo, in the first quarter of 2010.
