On January 17, the European Parliament decided to approve a revision of the Waste Shipment Regulation, which will introduce stricter control measures on the export of waste, including ferrous and non-ferrous metal scrap, to non-OECD countries.
According to the amended regulation, the export of non-hazardous waste to non-OECD countries that expressly consent to the receipt of EU waste and that will process it in an environmentally responsible manner is permitted, and the exporters' waste shipping facilities are inspected by a third party.
The adoption of the Waste Shipment Regulation is a useful step towards a more sustainable way of waste shipment to third countries. However, the European Steel Association (EUROFER) has called for some critical loopholes to be closed to prevent circumvention of the new measures and to ensure that environmental and social standards are strictly equivalent to those of the EU.
