Axel Eggert, Director General of the European Steel Association (EUROFER), stated: “The European steel industry is facing unique, existential challenges that need to be addressed urgently. We are grateful that the Commission - at the highest level - not only recognizes these challenges, but wants to work with our industry to find the right solutions. We look forward to these solutions being reflected in proposals and legislation, starting with the forthcoming Steel Action Plan and the revision of EU steel safeguards by April 1,”
EUROFER highlighted the need for urgent and effective action in four priority areas to address the challenges facing the European steel sector. The Union demanded the protection of trade policies by aligning them with market conditions, a strong CBAM mechanism to prevent carbon leakage, access to affordable clean energy to keep industry competitive, and keeping the strategic resource of ferrous scrap within Europe.
Mr. Eggert concluded: “Across Europe, jobs and steel capacity are being lost and decarbonization investments are being halted, while US tariffs are looming. The time for half-measures is over. Building on the positive momentum of today's Strategic Dialogue, we call on EU policymakers to stand up for European steel and rise to the historic challenge of protecting a strategic sector for Europe's future and a fundamental pillar of the European project”
