Eurasian Economic Commission removes barriers to scrap metal trade within the EEU

The Executive Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) at its meeting on 11 July 2023 concluded that the barrier related to restrictions on the wholesale trade in scrap and waste of ferrous and non-ferrous metals in the Republic of Belarus has been completely eliminated. The EEC press service reported that this barrier was removed from the list of barriers in the internal market of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

Earlier, on 24 November 2020, the EEC Board had recognized this restriction as an obstacle. Monitoring by the Commission revealed that only certain economic entities of the Republic of Belarus are granted the right to collect scrap and waste of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and export them outside the country. This created restrictions for legal entities from other EEU countries.

According to the information provided by the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Belarus, amendments to regulatory legal acts have been introduced to eliminate restrictions that are incompatible with Union law.

Varos Simonyan, EEC Minister for Internal Markets, Informatisation and ICT, noted that the removal of the barrier in the field of trade in services is another step towards the smooth functioning of the Union's internal market.
