EU gains required support to impose trade measures against the US

The European Commission’s proposal to implement trade countermeasures against the United States has received the backing of EU Member States today. The decision comes in response to the tariffs the US began imposing in March on imports of steel and aluminium from the European Union.

EU gains required support to impose trade measures against the US

The European Union considers these US tariffs to be “unjustified and damaging.” The Commission stressed that the measures are causing significant damage not only to European and American economies but also to the global trade system. Brussels reiterated that its priority remains to reach a balanced and mutually beneficial negotiated outcome with the United States.

With approval from the Member States, the countermeasures will come into force once the Commission completes its internal procedures and the implementing legislation is published. Duties are expected to be applied starting from 15 April.

The Commission also announced that these measures could be suspended immediately should a fair and balanced agreement be reached with the US.
