The primary goal of the mission was to synchronize the decarbonization efforts of Indian and European industries and to address the challenges that Indian businesses might encounter under CBAM. Thomas held meetings with prominent Indian government officials and key industry representatives.
"Europe, as a significant importer of CBAM goods, aims to ensure that the goods we import have the lowest possible carbon intensity," Thomas stated, highlighting the non-discriminatory nature of CBAM and its phased implementation.
The visit created an opportunity to explore CBAM's implications for Indian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Both parties agreed to continue technical discussions with India's Ministry of Energy and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. A report assessing the CBAM transition will be presented to the European Council and Parliament by the end of the next year.
The discussions also underscored shared interests in areas such as carbon trading, pricing mechanisms, and collaboration on energy efficiency, renewable energy, and clean technology initiatives.
