Energy efficiency in buildings attracted attention at Turkeybuild Istanbul

Yapi Fuari continues to host nearly 100 speakers for 4 days with the motto "better architecture, better engineering and earthquake-resistant zero energy building possible" within the scope of its 45th anniversary. Yapi Fuari - Turkeybuild Istanbul, where trends in the construction sector are discussed and the latest construction technologies and building products are exhibited, keeps the pulse of the construction sector in Turkey on its third day.

Energy efficiency in buildings attracted attention at Turkeybuild Istanbul

Yapi Fuari - Turkeybuild Istanbul, which is the largest in the region covering the Balkans, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries, Middle East and North Africa and among the top 5 in the world, started the day with a session on "Zero Energy Buildings, Thermal Insulation and its Effects on Human Health".

Arzu Uludağ Elazığ, Deputy General Manager of Marketing at NP Betek, Prof. Dr. Bülent Karadağ, Head of the Department of Pediatric Chest Diseases at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine, and Prof. Dr. Mikdat Kadıoğlu, Member of ITU Meteorology and Disaster Management, took part as speakers in the session.

Thermal Insulation in Houses Affects Human Health!

Arzu Uludağ Elazığ, Deputy General Manager in charge of Marketing at NP Betek, started her speech by talking about the importance of the exterior thermal insulation system and said, "We have been conducting a project for more than a year. In this project, we examine the impact of thermal insulation on human health. If we are going to take measures against issues such as the climate crisis, climate change and global warming, I think the fastest and most precise solution is the exterior insulation system. This is both a very easy and very precise method. The project we have been doing is about to reach two years and we have reached two clear conclusions. One of them is that the main difference in a thermally insulated house is that thermal comfort is higher and energy savings reach up to 60% in winter. Another one is that we observed that the temperature difference between the four walls in the insulated house is much lower.

Pointing out that climate changes are very fast and sudden, ITU Meteorology and Disaster Management Member Prof. Dr. Mikdat Kadıoğlu said, "The climate has been changing since the world has existed. But the last climate change is very different from the others. Activists call it a crisis. Climate changes are changing so fast that the ecosystem cannot adapt to it. As signs of climate change, we can list changes in the entire ecosystem such as the extinction of birds, rising sea water levels, increase in forest fires. The whole ecosystem is changing, and fossil fuels are at the heart of it. At this time, climate change has started to be caused by energy-intensive human behavior. We need to reduce energy use based on carbon intensity. Our biggest challenge is to combat rapid and abrupt climate change. First of all, how can we reduce fossil fuels? Based on this, the easiest and only way to save energy is to reduce energy use in buildings."

Prof. Dr. Bülent Karadağ, Head of the Department of Pediatric Chest Diseases at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine, said: "This is a project that I am very excited about as a pediatric pulmonologist. Within the scope of the project, we had the opportunity to examine the effects of thermal insulation on health. Two model house projects were made. My task here was to look at the differences between the insulated house and the uninsulated house, as well as to examine the situations that may affect human health. The most important of these was to check whether there was mold formation. In this regard, 2 thousand people from 10 provinces were surveyed. According to the results of the survey; if there is insulation in the house, you get more health advantages in terms of respiratory and allergic aspects. Another finding is that 50% more Covid is caught when there is no insulation at home. At this point, we have seen that mold is a very important risk factor. People cannot answer the question 'is there insulation in your home' very clearly, and my first goal here is to make people aware of this issue."

Another session of the day was held on 'Zero Energy Buildings and Sheathing' with the participation of NP Betek Insulation Product Manager Dr. Sanem Şenler Özbil, Energy Efficiency in Buildings Association - VERİMDER Association President Çağdaş Korkmaz and Undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization between 2014-2018 Prof. Dr. Mustafa Öztürk.

Energy Efficiency in Buildings is Critical for the Future of the World

In the session moderated by NP Betek Insulation Product Manager Dr. Sanem Şenler Özbil, Özbil started the session by pointing out that the effects of global warming can be felt not only through research and reading but also physically.

Prof. Dr. Mustafa Öztürk, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization between 2014 and 2018, said: "Greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase abnormally in our world, causing serious warming of the earth and climate change. Today it is cold in Turkey, but it is abnormally hot in countries like Portugal, Spain and Italy. This is because greenhouse gas emissions are increasing. We are causing a serious warming of the earth. The earth is getting warmer. We use air conditioners to cool our buildings and this use will increase day by day. Compared to pre-industrialization, the earth's temperature has risen over 1°C. If we do not insulate our buildings and make them energy efficient, greenhouse gas emissions will continue to increase."

Çağdaş Korkmaz, President of the Association for Energy Efficiency in Buildings - VERİMDER, said: "As an association, we are working to raise awareness on issues such as energy saving and climate change. In 2022, the total energy bill of our country exceeded 100 billion dollars. The importance of buildings in terms of both environmental protection and energy saving is undeniable. In the researches conducted, we have seen that the energy used in buildings surpasses the industry. We have the chance to save up to 60% with thermal insulation and sheathing in buildings."

Among the speakers of the last session of the third day; ODE Insulation Board Member Özgür Kaan Alioğlu, Turkey Şişecam, IZODER Thermal Insulation Commission Member Dilara Ayaz, Civil Engineer, Passive House Designer, Kadıköy Municipality Deputy Zoning Manager Serhat Şahin and IZODER Vice President Erdem Ateş addressed the issues of zero energy buildings and thermal insulation.

Opening the panel in the session moderated by ODE Insulation Board Member Özgür Kaan Alioğlu, Alioğlu defined zero building and said, "Our first priority is to minimize the energy consumption of the building, and when we look from this point of view, the place that needs the most energy in a building is heating and cooling."

Civil Engineer, Passive House Designer, Kadıköy Municipality Deputy Director of Zoning Serhat Şahin started his speech by addressing the issue of 'Why are zero energy buildings important for cities? Şahin said, "I define this century as the century of cities. A very large part of the world population has moved to cities. In 2050, it is estimated that approximately 66% of the world's population will live in cities. At this point, cities have a great responsibility for the climate crisis."

In the continuation of his speech, Şahin talked about the decisions taken by Kadıköy Municipality, where he works, in this sense, and explained the importance of passive house standards.

Speaking about the role of glass in almost zero-energy buildings, Dilara Ayaz, Member of the Thermal Insulation Commission of Şişecam Turkey and İZODER, emphasized the need to evaluate all the building elements, facade, roof and floor together. She evaluated the performance of glass insulation in the housing stock in Turkey.

Erdem Ateş, Vice President of İZODER, said, "Energy efficiency and thermal insulation are very much on our agenda. Disasters such as drought, energy crises, floods and forest fires that we are experiencing due to climate change are indicators that our world is alarmed. We need to fight climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, the most cost-effective and appropriate method for this is to make thermal insulation with the right material at the right thickness. Especially if we insulate our buildings in the right detail, the energy used in buildings can be saved. If we can insulate all our buildings correctly, it is possible to save between 12-15 billion dollars a year."

Yapi Fuari -Turkeybuild Istanbul will bid farewell to its visitors on its last day tomorrow with its event program where important issues will be discussed.
