Emissions in China's steel industry increased in January-August period

Between January and August 2023, China's steel industry saw a 5.2% increase in total emissions compared to the same period in 2022.

Here's a summary of emissions per ton of steel produced and other key figures:

· Emissions per ton of steel produced:

· Sulfur dioxide emissions decreased by 14.3% to 0.19 kg/t.

· Smoke and dust emissions decreased by 13.8% to 0.24 kg/t.

· Oxide nitrogen emissions decreased by 13.6% to 0.39 kg/t.

· Sulfur dioxide and solid particle emissions decreased by 14.7% and 14.1%, respectively.

Steel byproduct production:

Chinese steelmakers produced 54.7 million tons of steel slag from January to August 2023, a 0.5% increase compared to the previous year.

· Blast furnace slag production increased by 1.7% year-on-year to reach 143.7 million tons.

· The utilization rate of steelmaking slag was 98.3%, up by 0.38 percentage points year-on-year, while the utilization rate of blast furnace slag was 99.5%, up by 0.45 percentage points year-on-year.

Gas production:

· Blast furnace gas production amounted to 598.2 billion cubic meters, a minor increase of 0.04% compared to the previous year.

· Converter gas production saw a 1.6% increase year-on-year, reaching 53.4 billion cubic meters.

· Coke gas production increased by 2.3% year-on-year to 37.1 billion cubic meters.

· The utilization rates of blast furnace gas, converter gas, and coke gas were 98.6%, 98.5%, and 98.4%, respectively, with slight changes compared to the same period in 2022.
