Supported by notable backers such as Amazon.com and steel giant Nucor, Electra's innovative process operates at temperatures around 60 degrees which is drastically cooler than the 1600 degrees typically required in traditional steelmaking.
This new technology utilizes a chemical solution to dissolve iron ore, then applies electricity to extract pure iron, effectively eliminating the need for high-energy blast furnaces and fossil fuels. Electra's innovative method both aims to significantly decrease the substantial carbon emissions linked with traditional steel production and move industry towards more sustainable practices.
The company has recently initiated operations at its pilot plant and is planning to expand with a major factory aimed at producing one million tons of steel by the end of the decade in the United States.
