ECOACERO, a company of the ESTRELLA Group, has placed an order with SMS Group for the construction of a new rebar factory.

ECOACERO cooperates with SMS Group in rebar factory project

This facility will be built near Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. The aim is to serve the growing construction sector in the region.

Estrella, one of the largest construction services and products companies in the country, has taken a strategic step to strengthen the vertical integration and networking of its group companies. This diversification creates a strong portfolio that meets the growing demand from the construction sector, both locally in the Caribbean and in Central America.

With the commissioning of the new ECOACERO plant, Estrella offers a wide range of rebar to the market. This range of products has been specially designed according to the requirements of the different segments of the construction industry. The production utilises the latest technology from SMS to meet the highest international quality standards.

SMS Group realises the project for ECOACERO in two phases

The project, which focuses entirely on sustainability, will be realised in two phases. In the next phase, steel production will be integrated through the construction of a steel mill with a continuous casting plant. Scrap will be used as input material. SMS' comprehensive scope of supply and services includes the planning and construction of the complete rebar mill as well as the supply of mechanical and electrical equipment. In addition, SMS is supplying a reheating furnace for billets to the single-wire continuous rolling mill. The products will be processed in the state-of-the-art MEERdrive finishing unit, which will help reduce CO2 emissions while increasing the plant's efficiency.

The plant is scheduled to be commissioned in early 2025

The second stage consists of a highly efficient electric arc furnace (EAF). This furnace features modern burner and oxygen injection technology to reduce CO2 emissions and operating costs. The scrap-fed arc furnace is equipped with the latest SMS technologies for safe and automated operation to reduce the carbon footprint of the plant. The melting, refining and casting processes are all monitored by the X Pact Level 2 system. According to plant manufacturer SMS Group, this provides an "optimal and seamless" interface to the phase 1 rolling mill.
