Dinson Iron and Steel Company starts production in Zimbabwe

Dinson Iron and Steel Company (Disco), a subsidiary of China's Tsingshan Holdings Group Limited, which has started production at its USD 1.5 billion steel plant in Zimbabwe's Manhize region, will start supplying products to local and regional markets next month.

Dinson Iron and Steel Company starts production in Zimbabwe

In the first phase of the plant, an annual production capacity of 600,000 tons is targeted, while this capacity is planned to be increased to 5 million tons in the following stages. The facility, which currently produces 1,400 tons of pig iron per day, has also started producing steel billets as of this month. With this production capacity, Manhize has the potential to meet Zimbabwe's annual domestic market demand of 400 thousand tons.

Wilfred Motsi, Disco's Project Director, noted that the plant has not yet started selling to the market, but that they are taking demand orders by making stocks. Production is planned to be launched in September. Motsi also stated that they have received great interest from foreign markets such as China, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, in addition to Zimbabwe, and that they aim to sign export contracts for these markets.

In addition to increasing Zimbabwe's industrial capacity, this mega project is also notable for its positive impact on the country's trade balance. The country aims to achieve self-sufficiency and become a regional power by reducing its dependence on steel imports. Upon completion, the project is expected to become one of the largest facilities in Zimbabwe's steel sector.

This large-scale industrial investment will not only contribute to Zimbabwe's economic growth, but will also inspire other industrial and mining sectors in the region. Investors and industry experts emphasize that the Manhize Steel Plant is an important milestone for Zimbabwe's steps towards industrialization.
