Crude steel production in Arab countries rose by 5.4% year-on-year to 3,531 thousand metric tons in February, according to data from the Arab Steel Union (AISU), SteelRadar reported. Saudi Arabia, the region's largest producer, produced 812.8 thousand metric tons in February, a 6.3% decline and a 5.9% decrease compared to January.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) kept its production at 299 thousand tons, down 2.6%. In the January-February period, its total production decreased by 4.9% to 653.0 thousand tons. Oman, on the other hand, increased its crude steel production by 6.3% to 265 thousand tons, bringing its total output up by 3.1% to 490 thousand tons in the first two months of the year.
Production increased in Bahrain and Qatar. Bahrain produced 100 thousand tons, up 5.3%, while Qatar grew by 34.1% to 126.3 thousand tons. Since the beginning of the year, the total output of these two countries increased by 5.1% and 20.3%, respectively. Kuwait, on the other hand, increased its production by 11.2% to 95 thousand tons and recorded an increase of 20.1% in the January-February period.
Production Increased in North Africa
In February 2025, crude steel production in North Africa reached 1,157 thousand metric tons, up 11.8% compared to the previous month. Egypt produced 893 thousand metric tons in February, an increase of 6.4%. In the January-February period, its total production reached 1,783.7 thousand metric tons. Algeria produced 460 thousand metric tons in February, up 31.4%, and totaled 910 thousand metric tons, up 25.5% from January.
Production in Morocco remained stable at 115 thousand metric tons, while in Libya it rose by 24.4% to 84.2 thousand metric tons. In Tunisia, production declined by 3.8% to 5 thousand metric tons. North Africa's total crude steel production in the January-February period reached 3,122 thousand metric tons, up 5.5% from January.
Limited Increase in Eastern Mediterranean
Crude steel production in the Eastern Mediterranean region amounted to 285 thousand metric tons in February. This figure signaled a slight increase of 0.7% compared to the previous month. Iraq, the largest producer in the region, maintained its production of 250 thousand metric tons, showing no change. Jordan and Yemen produced 25 thousand and 10 thousand metric tons, respectively. Yemen reached 18 thousand metric tons, up 25% since the beginning of the year, indicating a gradual recovery in the region.
During January-February, total production in the Eastern Mediterranean region was recorded at 568 thousand metric tons, up 0.2% m-o-m.
Overall Steel Production on the Rise in Arab Countries
In February 2025, total crude steel production in all Arab countries amounted to 3,531 thousand metric tons, up 5.4% from the previous month. Production growth in the region was driven by strong performances, particularly in North Africa and certain Arab countries.
Total steel production reached 7,109 thousand metric tons in January-February, up 1.5% from January. Although some countries showed a decline in production, overall the region remained positive.
