CMA CGM has experienced a surge in the average size of its deployed fleet, reaching 1,677 TEU this year compared to 1,433 TEU in the preceding year. CMA CGM currently commands a market share of 19.9%, closely trailing behind MSC, which holds a 22% share. CMA CGM's ascendancy contradicts the prevailing trend of carriers diminishing their intra-Mediterranean exposure. MSC, for instance, has witnessed a decline in market share from 24% in 2022, while Maersk Line's share has decreased from 15% to 11% during the same period.
CMA CGM has introduced three new intra-Mediterranean services, contributing an additional 11,000 TEUs of capacity. The company's proactive approach is evident in its strengthened foothold in services to and from North Africa, particularly in the Maghreb states. CMA CGM has amplified its capacity to the Maghreb by an impressive 40.4% compared to the previous year.
While mainline operators still command a dominant presence in the Mediterranean short-sea segment, holding a combined market share of 66%, they have experienced a 5% decline in their collective share. This reduction is mainly attributed to the withdrawal of capacity by Maersk and ZIM Line. ZIM, for instance, has seen its market share dwindle to 2.2% over the past twelve months, relegating the carrier to the eighth position in the rankings.
CMA CGM announced that it has increased its transportation costs with an announcement. According to the statement;
