China files appeal to WTO on Canada’s electric vehicle and steel tariffs

China’s Ministry of Commerce announced on Wednesday that it has requested the World Trade Organization (WTO) to rule on Canada’s high tariffs on various products, including electric vehicles (EVs), steel, and aluminum from China.

Following the actions of the United States and the European Union, Canada imposed a 100% tariff on electric vehicles imported from China on Tuesday, while it also imposed a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum originating from China at the end of August.

China’s Ministry of Commerce has voiced strong opposition to the tariffs, stating that they will disrupt and distort global industrial and supply chains. The ministry also announced that it has raised litigation against Canada’s trade protectionist measures with the World Trade Organization and will conduct an anti-discriminatory investigation into the protectionist measures.
