China establishes planning department to develop low-altitude economy

In China, a department under the planning body has been established to coordinate policies and develop the low-altitude economy, which includes services provided by vehicles such as drones and air taxis, as well as smart urbanization applications.

China establishes planning department to develop low-altitude economy

China's main economic planning agency, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), announced the establishment of an administrative unit called the "Low-Altitude Economic Development Department" to serve as the coordinating body in this area.

The new department will focus on integrated management and innovation of airspace regulation, smart networks, and sustainable development, it said.

The low-altitude economy covers all economic activities in the airspace up to 1,000 meters above the ground, including drones, air taxis, and smart city applications.

The responsibility for this part of the airspace is undertaken by multiple agencies, including the Air Force and the Civil Aviation Administration.

The Low-Altitude Economic Development Department under the NDRC will serve as a coordinating body to formulate and implement development strategies in this area, conduct medium- and long-term planning, address problems in the rapidly growing sector, and put forward policy recommendations.
