Canadian Prime Minister Carney: “Our old relationship with the US is over”

Following US President Donald Trump's announcement of 25 % tariffs on automobile imports, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that the old trade relations between the two countries are over.

Canadian Prime Minister Carney: “Our old relationship with the US is over”

Speaking to the Financial Times, Carney stated that the prices imposed by the US have forced Canada to restructure its economies and use more reliable trading partners. “Our old relationship with the United States, based on the comparison of our economies and security cooperation, is over,” Carney declared.

Canada Will Retaliate

Stating that Canada is preparing to retaliate after Trump's tariff decision, Carney stated that “trade countermeasures that will have maximum impact in the US and minimum impact in Canada should not be taken.” However, he did not provide details on the methods of retaliation.

The automotive sector, one of Canada's largest exports, plays a critical role for the country's economy. According to AP, the automobile industry directly employs 125,000 people in Canada and indirectly employs 500,000 people. Carney emphasized that new trading partners should be planned for Canada's liquidation to the US.
