Canadian Algoma plans to start up two electric arc furnaces

Canada's Algoma Steel will install two electric arc furnaces at its Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, to install two electric arc furnaces to replace the existing blast furnace.

Canadian Algoma plans to start up two electric arc furnaces

The EAF is planned to be operational in mid-2024. They are expected to enter production capacities and decommission the blast furnace in 2026.

Two 250-tonne Digimelter furnaces are being built by Italian equipment manufacturer Danieli. Their total capacity will be about 3.3 million tonnes per year, more than the blast furnace in operation (2.5 million tonnes). The increase in capacity will be in line with Algoma Steel's own rolling capacity of steel production.

According to the company, the total investment in the project will be approximately C$700 million ($534 million), of which approximately C$150 million ($114 million) will be invested by Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie municipality to obtain the necessary building permits.

The furnaces will utilise scrap metal as well as other types of raw materials. The plant, which is preparing to start up, also includes an oxygen-cleaned vacuum degasser and equipment for out-of-furnace processing.

These will make it possible to obtain high-quality steel grades for the production of flat products. The new furnaces will also reduce carbon dioxide emissions at this plant by 70 per cent, according to Algoma Steel.
