British Steel has clinched a substantial contract to provide rail infrastructure for Egypt's ambitious Green Line railway project. The agreement, valued in the multi-million-pound range, underscores British Steel's pivotal role in enhancing connectivity across North Africa.
Under this contract, British Steel will supply a whopping 9,500 tonnes of track from its Scunthorpe facility in the UK. This track will be integral to Egypt's first fully electrified mainline and freight network, which stretches an impressive 660km from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean.
The Green Line project is poised to revolutionize Egypt's transportation landscape, boasting speeds of up to 250km per hour. This high-speed railway promises to not only accommodate passenger traffic but also bolster freight transportation efficiency.
Jérôme Bonef, British Steel's Commercial Manager of Export–Rail, has voiced his excitement about the company's participation in this transformative initiative. He underscored British Steel's unwavering commitment to delivering top-notch quality and ensuring customer satisfaction through timely deliveries.
The Green Line's significance extends beyond its sheer scale; it holds the potential to significantly reduce energy consumption and air pollution in Egypt. Bonef revealed that British Steel is gearing up to dispatch two shipments of rail to Alexandria, the country's northern port, with deliveries slated for this month and June. These supplies will pave the way for the expansion of the railway to the Mediterranean coast via El Alamein in the northwest and to the Gulf of Suez and the Red Sea in the east.
As British Steel continues to play a pivotal role in shaping global transportation infrastructure, this contract underscores its prowess in delivering innovative solutions to meet the evolving needs of emerging economies.
