Brazil to appeal to WTO against Trump's tariffs

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has warned that US President Donald Trump's tariffs risk damaging the US economy and will harm global trade. Lula stated that they will appeal to the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the trade tax on Brazilian steel.

Brazil to appeal to WTO against Trump's tariffs

At a press conference in Tokyo, Lula stated, "This will increase the prices of goods and could lead to an inflation that he has not yet realized. Protectionism does not benefit any country in the world." On Wednesday, Trump announced a 25% tariff on imported cars and light trucks. The decision includes 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum from Brazil as part of the global trade war Trump launched during his presidency.

Lula stated that the Brazilian government has so far been unable to negotiate a return to the policy of annual duty-free export quotas. "We have two decisions to make. One is to appeal to the World Trade Organization, which we will do, and the other is to impose higher tariffs on American products. We cannot remain silent," . In Tokyo, Lula held talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba aimed at strengthening economic and trade ties.
