Borçelik, Türkiye's largest and highest quality galvanized steel producer, has been awarded the prestigious certification provided by ResponsibleSteel for its production facility in Gemlik. ResponsibleSteel is an internationally recognized standard and certification program for the steel industry that promotes the reduction of environmental impacts and more sustainable use of natural resources. Borçelik became the first steel producer in Türkiye to receive this certification with its Gemlik production facility.

Speaking about Borçelik's achievement, which is the first of its kind in the industry, Annie Heaton, CEO of ResponsibleSteel, said: "The fact that a production facility operating in Türkiye has been awarded ResponsibleSteel™ certification for the first time demonstrates Borçelik's commitment to being a leader in the Turkish steel industry and, more importantly, the company's commitment to implementing the strictest criteria for sustainability. The company is committed to reaching its environmental net zero emission target by 2050 and is currently implementing many energy efficiency projects at its production facility to support this journey. In this context, the company also plans to utilize renewable energy with the installation of wind and solar power plants. The plant is implementing its own water management program to monitor efficient water use and prevent future water scarcity. It exceeds expectations with efforts to minimize its environmental impact. Borçelik became a ResponsibleSteel™ member in 2020, joining the ranks of the world's largest steel production companies. Following the adaptation process to the ResponsibleSteel™ standard, the company was audited by leading independent audit company UK CARES before being awarded the ResponsibleSteel™ certificate.

The standard has very high environmental and social transformation expectations. At the end of this preparation period, we successfully completed a 14-day, very detailed and challenging audit process conducted by the leading independent audit company UK CARES. At the end of the process, we were happy to become the first ResponsibleSteel™ certified company in our country. We will continue to set an example for our sector with our activities."
