Ferrous Division: Navigating the evolving landscape for recycled steel!

BIR Copenhagen 2024 is approaching! Ferrous Division announces programme

The global market for recycled steel has experienced significant shifts in supply and demand dynamics over the past year. The next plenary session of the BIR Ferrous Division, to be held in Copenhagen on Tuesday May 28 under the presidency of Shane Mellor of Mellor Metals Ltd (GBR), will delve into these developments and explore the key challenges and opportunities shaping the recycled steel industry in 2024.

Following presentation of the main findings of the 15th edition of “World Steel Recycling in Figures” by the Division’s Statistics Advisor Rolf Willeke, guest speaker Atilla Widnell - co-founder and Managing Director of Singapore-based Navigate Commodities - will address various key issues relating to the evolving recycled steel landscape.

Recent disruption in the Red Sea and Suez Canal has negatively impacted shipments throughout the recycled steel market. This session will analyze the impacts on pricing resulting from logistical challenges and rerouting of shipments, as well as explore the implications for exports to key markets in the Middle East and Asia.

Implementation of the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) puts another question mark over recycled steel flows. The Ferrous Division session in Copenhagen will discuss whether the CBAM is likely to hinder exports from Europe and impact global supply chains.

The debate will also cover strategies to counter perceived “trade barriers” while, at the same time, advocating fair trade practices and fostering collaborative solutions across the recycled steel value chain to ensure a sustainable and balanced market.

Several factors will determine the direction and momentum of recycled steel pricing as we head towards the midpoint of 2024. The session in Copenhagen will explore how economic trends and supply chain resilience, as well as trade policies and environmental regulations, will shape the recycled steel landscape.

A subsequent panel discussion, moderated by Mr Mellor and involving the guest speaker as well as divisional board members, will provide the opportunity for an interactive exchange not only between experts on the podium but also all other delegates attending this high-profile event. To everyone present, the Ferrous Division session in Copenhagen will guarantee valuable insights into a host of critical topics and better equip them to navigate the ever-changing recycled steel market.
