Baosteel Zhanjiang and Primetals Technologies reach a big deal

Baosteel Zhanjiang Iron & Steel, located in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, has signed a contract with Primetals Technologies, a Japanese-Austrian company listed on the London stock exchange. Under the contract, Primetals Technologies will design, supply and put into operation a radial twin-wire continuous caster (CCM) for the production of specialised large slabs.

The plant will have an annual capacity of 3.5 million tonnes and will produce semi-finished products up to 2,700 mm wide and 450 mm thick, and will be used to produce extra thick slabs used in shipbuilding and wind power tower construction.

The new CCM will be equipped with unique Single Roll DynaGap (SRD) segments. These segments, together with process models in the Level 2 automation package, will dynamically determine the optimum gap size as production parameters such as steel grade, cooling method and casting speed change. This will allow SRD segments to customise the inter-roll clearances and the force applied to each roll.

The SRD segments can apply a force of 5,000 kilonewtons to each roll, which significantly improves the internal build quality of the cast slabs through significant thickness curling during the casting process. The result is an ultra-thick slab that is in demand in various industries.
