Protests in Bangladesh disrupt trade and communications

Student protests against job quotas in Bangladesh turned violent, resulting in numerous casualties and internet blackout. Trade with India through land ports has been suspended and the situation is alarming in the South Asian region.

Protests in Bangladesh disrupt trade and communications

More than a hundred people have been killed in Bangladesh in mass protests by students against the government's quota of jobs in the country last week. The demonstrations, which began last month, led to a nationwide internet blackout from Thursday and an order by the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to shoot to kill. The protests in Bangladesh started peacefully but soon turned violent, resulting in many casualties.

Experts suggest that Bangladesh's strategic location makes it a key player in South Asian geopolitics. Any shift in the political landscape of Bangladesh can have far-reaching consequences for the entire region. Thus, the current riots are not only a domestic issue in Bangladesh but also a matter of regional concern.

The riots have already affected not only the domestic situation in the country but also the external economic situation. Trade between India and Bangladesh through land ports came to a standstill on Sunday as there was no movement of trucks back and forth. The Bangladesh side of Petrapole port remains non-functional. Trade from other land ports in Bangladesh, including Petrapole, Gojadanga, Phulbari and Mahadipur, also came to a standstill as Bangladesh Customs declared a two-day holiday from Sunday. Passenger traffic continues, mostly students returning for security reasons.

Exports from seaport have not stopped but have reduced significantly, primarily due to demand.'' We have order for Bangladesh market, I hold temporary until got clear information. Almost all communication in Bangladesh is blocked now. We only got warn from customer in the beginning of riot'', source told SteelRadar.
