Austria records a decrease in steel production

According to Worldsteel data, Austria's crude steel production decreased by 0.5% compared to the same month of the previous year and by 0.6% on a monthly basis to 633,380 tons. Austria maintained its 22nd place in the global steel production ranking with its crude steel production figure.

In the January-July period of 2024, this figure increased by 0.9% compared to the same period of the previous year and reached a total of 4.47 million tons. Across the European Union, steel production in July was 10.8 million tons, a decrease of 4.7% compared to the same period in 2023. For the first seven months of the year, total EU steel production reached 78 million tons, an increase of 11.4% compared to the same period in 2023.

voestalpine, one of Austria's largest steelmakers, announced that it has completed a comprehensive modernization of one of its blast furnaces in Linz. The refurbishment of blast furnace No. 6 took about 80 days and cost 33 million dollars. A similar refurbishment is planned for another blast furnace at the Donawitz site.

With the start of the 2024/25 fiscal year, market trends have not changed significantly, the company noted. Voestalpine also achieved better results than in Europe in the 2023/24 financial year, especially in overseas markets. The company expects continued strong demand, especially from rail infrastructure, aviation and storage technology. The automotive sector and the energy industry are also expected to continue to grow as part of this positive trend.
