ArcelorMittal to stop Polish Blast Furnace

Global steelmaker ArcelorMittal announced on Friday (March 24th) that it will stop a blast furnace in Poland for environmental remediation.

ArcelorMittal to stop Polish Blast Furnace

The company will close its BF2 unit in Dabrowa Gornicza for three months, with a crude steel capacity of 2.4 million tons per year, to carry out the improvement aimed at increasing efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of the furnace.

The project cost is expected to be 720 million zlotys ($165 million). Arcelormittal's 2.4 million-ton BF3 at the same site will remain operational.

Market sources were concerned about whether the upcoming closure would increase the supply tightness in the European hot rolled coil market.

Earlier this week, ArcelorMittal was forced to stop the 2.7 million-ton BF-A in Gijon, Spain, after a fire broke out.
