ArcelorMittal switches to electric furnaces to reduce carbon emissions at Fos-sur-Mer plant

ArcelorMittal is planning a radical transformation of its steelmaking plant in Fos-sur-Mer, France.

ArcelorMittal switches to electric furnaces to reduce carbon emissions at Fos-sur-Mer plant

The company has announced that it will move away from the traditional blast furnace method of steel production to electric furnaces in 2022. This will be accomplished by commissioning electric furnaces by 2027 and completely decommissioning two blast furnaces by 2030. This strategic move is part of ArcelorMittal's sustainability and carbon footprint reduction efforts.

One of the company's latest steps to reduce carbon emissions is the commissioning of a scoop furnace at its facilities. This advanced technology plays an important role in the carbon capture and storage process and aims to increase production efficiency. The two new boilers in particular stand out with a capacity of 330 tons each. Once this transformation is complete, the plant's scrap steel utilization is expected to increase five-fold. This will allow more recycled materials to be used in the production process and reduce carbon emissions by around 10%.

ArcelorMittal's initiative is an important example of the green transformation not only of the company, but also of the steel industry in general. The switch to electric furnaces is part of a growing trend in the industry towards lower-carbon production processes.
