Currently, this very high-strength product represents 60% of the steel used in the automotive industry. The steelmaker's latest generation of this type of material now guarantees a mechanical strength level of up to 1,800 pascals (Pa)/megapascals (MPa) and properties that make the product 20% lighter.
In parallel, laser welding makes it possible to adjust the thickness and quality of the steel to the functional requirements of the customer, as well as reducing the amount of material used by reducing scrap consumption.
The FuseMetal lab, established through a partnership between ArcelorMittal and Compiègne Technology University in France, will showcase groundbreaking research. This research will significantly contribute to the company's vehicle lightweighting solutions, optimize material utilization, minimize scrap, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
ArcelorMittal's R&D director, Francis Schmit, explains the benefits of the third-generation high-strength steels, stating that their complex chemical compositions and microstructures pose challenges to their weldability. However, the company is investing heavily in France to develop innovative solutions for the automotive industry. By 2024, five new production lines will be launched at ArcelorMittal's Mardyck electrical steel sites in northern France, focusing on producing electrical steel for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrid vehicles. This venture involves a €300 million ($322m) investment.
Simultaneously, ArcelorMittal is introducing the 5G network for industrial purposes in France to support digitization and automation at its French production facilities. The company's 5G Steel project, initiated in 2021, is now fully operational at the Dunkirk and Mardyck plants.
In an effort to promote sustainable practices, ArcelorMittal has signed a memorandum of understanding with KIRCHHOFF Automotive, a company specializing in the production of complex metal and hybrid structures for vehicle bodies and chassis. The agreement aims to develop low carbon-emission steel solutions for cars and trucks, strengthening collaboration between the two companies in the field of sustainability.
