ArcelorMittal and GM reach agreement on X-carb steel partnership

ArcelorMittal North America's Dofasco plant in Hamilton, Ontario, will supply General Motors with XCarb recycled and renewably produced (RRP) steel, which has lower CO2 emissions than many other carbon steel products.

ArcelorMittal and GM reach agreement on X-carb steel partnership

The company produces XCarb in an electric arc furnace (EAF) with 70-90% scrap and does not use carbon offsets. According to ArcelorMittal, the CO2 impact has been verified by an independent party for Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Scope 1-3 emissions. The company also states that it uses renewable sources of electricity in the steelmaking process.

"As a global leader in the steel industry, we produce smarter steels for people and the planet, and XCarb RRP is one of the smartest steels. With physically lower CO2 emissions, this steel will help ArcelorMittal achieve its goal of becoming carbon neutral. We are proud to join GM in their march towards a zero-emission future," said ArcelorMittal's President and CEO, Mr Gonzalez.

The Dofasco plant is switching from blast furnace steelmaking to direct reduced iron (DRI) EAF steelmaking. This transition is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 60 per cent.
