The Economic Committee, established in 2018 under the Arab Iron and Steel Union, held its 10th meeting in Doha on April 14-15, hosted by Qatar Steel. The committee operates to examine the impact of the economic situation in Arab countries on iron and steel production and consumption and publishes a report on the sector twice a year.
Representatives from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Algeria, Kuwait, Qatar, Tunisia, Libya and Morocco attended the meeting. However, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Iraq, which are on the committee, did not attend the meeting.
During the two-day sessions, the new customs policies of the US, the conflict in Gaza, uncertainties in global energy markets, rising inflation rates and the reflections of major development projects in many Arab countries on the sector were evaluated.
Committee members discussed the current economic pressures as well as new investment and cooperation opportunities for the sector. The Economic Committee plays a critical role in formulating policies that will shape the future of the Arab iron and steel industry.
